Restorers see red over Aachen cathedral

Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne's landmark cathedral in Aachen was originally covered in bright red stucco plasterwork to make it look more Byzantine, architectural historians said Monday.
Traces of plaster mixed with brick dust were found by work crews restoring the 1 200-year-old cathedral.
"We have been able for the first time to come up with definitive proof of what a dazzling red spectacle the cathedral must have presented when the emperor had it built," said architectural historian Ulrike Heckner.
