Greek museums urge public to help buy Byzantine treasure

Three Greek museums appealed to the public on Wednesday to open their wallets and help the country acquire a 12th-century Byzantine treasure being sold by a private collector for more than two million euros.
The treasure -- nine decorated silver plates encrusted with gold, used for secular purposes -- was "unique" in that the only other plates of that kind known to exist were isolated items and not a set, Anastassia Tourta of Salonika's Byzantine museum told a news conference.
The dinner service was probably made in Istanbul and belonged to a powerful Byzantine family, possibly that of an emperor or prince, added the director of Athens' Benaki museum, Angelos Delivorias.
