Coffin unearthed: Road excavation turns up 18th-century remains

A deteriorated coffin was discovered on Tuesday as workers from the city of Portsmouth and Gove Construction were doing excavation work at the intersection of Court and Chestnut streets.
The base of the coffin, a long wooden board covered with dark earth, roots and rocks, was at the bottom of an 8-foot hole. The city immediately contacted Kathy Wheeler, of Independent Archaeological Consulting LLC, the consulting archaeologist on the Court Street project.
Initial investigation revealed that there may be multiple interments at the site dating back to the early 1700s, which predates the construction of Chestnut Street in the 1790s.
