British archaeologists have hailed the discovery of a 2,000-year-old Roman bowl, unique for its Celtic-style design and Latin inscriptions, in moorland in northern England.
The bronze vessel, with motifs inlaid with coloured enamel, dates from 2 AD and names four forts along Hadrian's Wall, the 114 kilometre barrier near the England-Scotland border that was built by emperor Hadrian in the same century.
"This is an absolutely wonderful find," said Sally Worrell of the Portable Antiquities Scheme, a British voluntary program for the recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public.
