Local dig reveals ancient pottery

Pottery shards possibly dating back to 2000 B.C. have been unearthed during preliminary digs on city-owned property.
It's unlikely the small shard collection, found on a 1.27 acre plot on Joyner Street, would mean much to the casual observer. But for Daphne Owens Battle of Cypress Cultural Consultants in Beaufort, the find is very significant.
Battle said if archaeologists are given the go-ahead to explore further, the findings could tell the story of Woodland Period residents who used the site between 2,000 B.C to A.D. 900.
