Did humans kill animal 11,000 years ago?
The slanted, weed-covered west bank of the Big Sioux River is luring a band of excavators this weekend to look for clues to ancient South Dakota history.
Assistant state archaeologist Michael Fosha and several volunteers are combing the soil and river bottom in search of pieces of a mammoth that fell dead here or nearby an estimated 11,000 years ago.
Their work builds on the initial discovery of the mammoth's skull, jawbone and rib here two years ago. If they find enough additional evidence this weekend, they'll set up a more elaborate excavation next summer.
