On 25 July police in Apsalos near Pella in Northern Greece detained a 54-year-old man who was subsequently arrested and charged with taking part in illegal excavations as well as with being involved in black market sales and purchases of antiquities in Greece and abroad. While searching the man’s property, police discovered a cache of some 2,700 silver and bronze coins, stone tools, rings, funeral stelae and artefacts dating from the Neolithic period to the age of the Ottoman rule in Greece (15th-19th centuries).
