With a Panama hat glued to his head, a spirited personality and an appreciation for the power of the media, Zahi Hawass is one of the most colorful secretaries general to have graced the office of Egypt's Supreme Council for Antiquities (SCA).
In recent months, Hawass has launched a noisy campaign to retrieve precious antiquities stolen from Egypt lately, as well as those spirited out of the country in earlier times. While Hawass' agenda has won the hearts of many an Egyptian nationalist, his often ready-aim-fire comments - none of which the media appears to have missed - have caused an uproar on several occasions.
