Roswell city workers made an unusual discovery while clearing an illegal dumping ground on the city's southwest side.
Amid the broken appliances and mounds of colored glass, they found human remains and pottery shards.
Anthropologists with the Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque say the bones are indeed ancient.
An archaeologist from the Roswell Museum and Art Center agrees, saying the artifacts likely came from a Hondo Valley Pueblo village dating from between 1200 and 1400 A.D.
The modern man-made markings on the pottery shards, arrowheads and human bones were likely made by archaeologists who excavated the village in the 1930s.
Officials say the artifacts may have been thrown out after a flood washed through Roswell in the 1940s.
