Unique Nagi temple discovered in Orissa

A unique temple dating to the 10th century AD with Nagi sculpture as the presiding deity, has been discovered in Ghasiandhuti village under Balipatana block in Orissa's Khurda district.
The temple, popularly known as the Uttarayani temple by local villagers, has Khakhara type design and the villagers worship the deity as 'Uttarayani' little knowing that it was a Nagi image, unknown to historians and archaeologists of the State.
State Archaeological Department (SAD) Superintendent B.K. Rath told UNI on Friday that they came across the new discovery when the site was inspected for conservation of the monument from the 11th Finance Commission's fund on being approached by the local villagers.
